Save Existing Healthcare in Leesburg and Western Loudoun
In recent years, healthcare facilities at Inova Loudoun Hospital Lansdowne, in Leesburg at the Cornwall campus and in the South Riding community have evolved to meet the growing healthcare needs of our residents. These services-and the future of healthcare in Loudoun County-are at risk if the Broadlands Regional Medical Center (BRMC) is developed in Broadlands.
Developing the BRMC will place two hospitals with duplicative services four miles apart and close to existing services in Leesburg. Three healthcare facilities in such close proximity will exceed current demand for healthcare services and cause all facilities to struggle financially. Financial difficulties will cause healthcare facilities at Lansdowne, Cornwall and elsewhere around the county to be reduced or, in some cases, eliminated entirely.
The adverse impact the BRMC will have on existing medical services in Loudoun County includes the following:
- Loss of 16 medical surgical beds, the Pediatric Emergency Department and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Inova Loudoun Hospital Lansdowne
- At the Cornwall Campus, all existing medical/clinical services are at high risk to close, including community programs like the Loudoun Community Free and Loudoun Community Health Center which could lose their donated space.
- Reduction of services at the Dulles South Medical Center and the Purcellville Medical Center, as well as delays or cancellation of plans for health centers in Lovettsville and Middleburg, among others.
Building the next hospital on Route 50 will provide much-needed healthcare services for residents who currently lack access to such services. The BRMC does nothing to address the current and future healthcare needs of the Route 50 corridor. The BRMC does, however, put existing and future healthcare services in Leesburg, Lansdowne and Western Loudoun at risk.
